Season 5

History. Pop Culture. And All That Jazz...  (2012)

The company brings to the stage a transformation of dance through nine decades, from the rebellious and roaring 1920s to the diversity of style in contemporary jazz seen today. The innovation of jazz is rooted in a culture of ‘cool’ and Momentum presents a snapshot of the times and the style of the artists that shaped a culture. This is a look at the American art of jazz that began a world away in West Africa and found its way to the ballrooms, stages, movies, night clubs, and hearts of all kinds of people. Through the sounds of popular music, from jazz to hip hop, this show will have you smiling and tapping your feet.  A journey through time to set to the sounds of Louis Armstrong and Benny Goodman, Carl Perkins, the Bee Gees, Run DMC, Michael Jackson and The Black Eyed Peas, this show highlights both dance history and music that surrounded it.
